About the Diocese
Our Foundation of Faith
The St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, established on March 13, 2001, is a vibrant community of faith that stands as the first ecclesiastical territory of the Syro-Malabar Church outside India. As a beacon of Eastern Catholic tradition, the diocese serves the spiritual and pastoral needs of approximately 87,000 Syro-Malabar Catholics across the United States.

A Nationwide Mission
With 52 parishes and 35 missions spread throughout the country, the diocese nurtures and guides the Syro-Malabar faithful, fostering a deep-rooted sense of community, worship, and service. At the heart of this spiritual family is the Mar Thoma Sleeha Cathedral, located in Bellwood, Illinois, which serves as the mother church and a symbol of our enduring faith.

Our Role in the Universal Church
The diocese operates under the direct jurisdiction of the Holy See and the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches, reflecting its unique status within the Catholic Church. This special relationship honors the rich liturgical and spiritual heritage of the Syro-Malabar Church and upholds our mission to preserve and share this vibrant tradition with future generations.
